Faith In Action ‘Through Elijah A Man Of God’

A story of Elijah the prophet, Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal {false prophets}.

1Kings 18 verse 19 to 21

V 19 Now summons all Israel to meet me at Mount Carmel, along with the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah {also false prophets}who eat at Jezebel’s table.

vV20 So Ahab summoned all the Israelites and gathered the prophets at Mount Carmel. V21 Then Elijah approached all the people and said “How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If “Yahweh is God {the Lord God Almighty] follow Him. But if Baal follow him”. but the people didn’t answer him with a word. fear had gripped the nation under the wicked Queen Jezebel. Elijah had issued a challenge to his people.

1 Kings 18 verse 22 (Paraphrased) Then Elijah turned to the prophets of Baal ” Build an alter to Baal, put wood on it as well as your animal sacrifice, but don’t set it on fire. Call on Baal to send fire. 1 Kings 18 verse 24 Then you call on the name of your god,and I will call on the name of Yahweh, The God who answers with fire, He is God. All the people answered “That sounds good”. Elijah mocked the prophets of Baal, by saying isn’t your god Baal the god of rain and storm, he should be able to send lightening to set the sacrifice on fire.

1kings 18 verse 26 So they took the bull that he gave them prepared it,and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying “Baal answer us”. But there was no sound, no one answered. Then they did their lame dance around the alter they had made.

V 27:At noon Elijah mocked them, He said ” shout loudly, for he’s a god. Maybe he is thinking it over, maybe he has wandered away or maybe he is on the road. Perhaps he is sleeping and will wake up”.

V 28:They shouted loudly, and cut themselves with knives and spears, according to their customs, until blood gushed from them. V 29: All afternoon they kept on raving until offering of the evening sacrifice, but there was no sound, no one answered, no one paid attention. In spite of all their wild shouts and capers, nothing happened, at last they collapsed, exhausted and hopeless.

1 kings 18 verse 30: Then Elijah said to all the people “Come near me”, so all the people approached him. Then he repaired he Lord’s alter that had been torn down. Story paraphrased again. Elijah mended the broken down alter. He laid wood and meat on it, then dug a trench. He ordered the people to bring water and pour over the sacrifice. Large jars of precious water (precious because of the drought) until it was thoroughly soaked. Then he asked for more water. Everyone could see that Elijah had a far harder task. then the prophet of Baal.

All that water could put out a fire. Elijah prayed Lord let the people know that you are the only true God. Immediately the watching crowd saw flames light up the alter. The fire consumed the sacrifice, the wood and even the stones the alter was made from. The fire licked up the water in the trench and scorched the earth around. Elijah had proved to all watching the God that he served, and the God who offers us salvation answers pray.

James 5 verse 16 to 18 V 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The intense pray of the righteous is very powerful.

V 17 Elijah was a man with nature like ours, yet he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the land.

V 18 Then he prayed again, and the sky gave rain and the land produced fruit. Let us stand up foe what is right, no matter what the cost, be prepared to challenge the thoughts of the wicked with the truth of God’s Word. Remember THE INTENSE PRAYS OF THE RIGHTEOUS (THOSE STANDING RIGHT WITH GOD) ARE VERY POWERFUL.
