From The Heart

Gifts of Holy Spirit

At our Ministry College this week we are looking at the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. I am excited and encouraged, so wanted to share about this today. 1 Corinthians chapter 12 – Spiritual Gifts: Unity in Diversity.

Thayer’s Greek Lexicon. STRONGS NT 5486 charisma – a gift of grace, a free gift – ‘a gift of favor which one receives without any merit of his own’ A (spiritual endowment.) The gift of divine grace. Verse 1 of the Amplified Version “the spiritual gifts are (the supernatural endowments of supernatural energy). “

1 Corinthians 12:4 “There are diversities of gifts (charisma) but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries but the same Lord; – diversities of activities but it is the same God Who works all in all.”

Verse 7 ‘to each one is given the manifestation of the Holy Spirit for good and profit. So the gifts are given by the Holy Spirit to help, be profitable, be expedient – to help each other. The 9 gifts are the word of wisdom; the word of knowledge; faith; gifts of healings; the working of miracles; prophecy; discerning of spirits; tongues and interpreting of tongues.

We need one another; so let’s encourage each other to flow with the Holy Spirit and in the giftings God has given. This chapter talks of seeing, hearing, smelling etc; and how God has set each one in the body as He pleased. We cannot say of one member “we don’t need you”. V 25 says that there should be no schism in the body but that the members should have the same care for one another. Ephesians 4:15,16 :- says ‘speaking the truth in love, the body of Christ may grow up in all things into Him, even as every joint (believer) is effectively working, and every part does its share. ‘

I heard that a link between holiness and humility is a sense of humor. I like this. I can tend to take myself too seriously and so give myself a hard time when I make a mistake, and even sometimes be too cautious and so not stepping out in what I believe the Lord is showing me. However, when we choose to operate in love – as 1 Corinthians chapter 13 tells us, we are choosing the more excellent way, and Grace can flow in abundance.

Whatever we do, let’s honor our Lord and our Friend as we desire to walk in love and consider how to encourage and build up others.

God’s rich blessings.
