BUILDING A HOUSE FOR THE LORD
Reader: The word of the Lord came through Haggai the prophet to the governor of Judah, and to Joshua a son of the High Priest Jehozadak.
Person one: Jehoza who? What kind of name is that?
Person 2: It must be some Big Wig, I will just call him ‘Dak.’
Reader: This is what the Lord Almighty says, ‘The time has not yet come for the Lord’s house to be built.’ Then the word of the Lord came through the Prophet Haggai.
Person 1-‘Oh no, not him again, do we have to listen?’
Reader: Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin.’ (The Lord spoke through the Prophet). Now this is what the Lord Almighty says, ‘Give careful thought to your ways.’
Person 2: Puts hands over his ears and whispers, ‘Here we go again, another lecture!’ ‘On and on about a new house, as if we haven’t enough to do.’
The prophet continues. ‘You have planted much but harvested little. You eat but never have your fill. You put on clothes but are never warm, you earn wages only to put them in a purse with holes in it.’
Person 1 calls out, ‘Hey, where do you get that line from, no holes in my purse mate and I eat to stuff myself.’ (Laughs out loud)
Reader/Prophet: ‘This is what the Lord Almighty says’, “Go up into the mountains and bring down timber and build the house so that I may take pleasure in it and be honored.’ says the Lord.
Person 2: (mumbling and grumbling); ‘Blimey, this Lord Almighty don’t want much does he? Go climb a mountain, get wood and build another flaming abode!!!’ I can hardly climb out of bed let alone a hike up a mountain.’
Reader/Prophet: I can hear a protest but you all expected so much but it turned out be little. What you brought home, I blew away.
‘Why?’ declares the Lord Almighty.
Person 1: ‘Yeah, really just why was that eh?’
Person 2: ‘Okay, enough of these, ‘says the Lord Almighty’s,’ We get the message about who is the boss in charge so we are listening, okay?’
Reader/Prophet: ‘Because of my house which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with his own house. Therefore, because of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth its crops. I have called for a drought on the fields and on the mountains, on the grain, the new wine, the oil and whatever the ground produces, the men and cattle, and on the labor of your hands.’
Person 1. (throws his arms in the air and shouts,) ‘This Lord Almighty must be a powerful guy so he means what he says. I am going to get out of here quick!’
I hope there are no holes in my purse Mate!’ ‘BYE!’ (He runs off to pack up)
Person 2: Gee, I am kind of interested to see how this God Almighty operates. Perhaps I’ll stick around to help build this ‘GOD’ house’.
So he stayed and worked on building the house of the Lord and so must we.
