1 John At A Glance

First John was written by the aging apostle John. Unlike the other apostles, he does not address his letter to any church or any particular person. He writes to all Christians, old and young.

Chapter 2 verse 12 to 14 He calls Christians by a tender word “teknie” – which means “born ones” or bairns”. God is dealing with His very own born-again children.

The theme “You may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have Life in His Name. That those who believe in Christ might Know that they have eternal life.

First John was written because the faith was being attacked by false teaching.

1 John 2 verse 18 to 28; 4 verse 1 to 6 ; 5 verse 6 to 7.

Some individuals once associated with the Christian community had adopted heretical doctrine, particularly as it relates to belief about Christ. In response John wrote this epistle firstly to combat the propaganda of the false teachers. Secondly John writes to reassure the believers.

John longs to bring his hearers into intimate fellowship with the Father and The Son, that their joy might be full. 1 John ch 1 verses 3 and 4; 2 verses 13 and 14.

Christ, who was God, took on flesh and dwelt with people so they would know how much God loves them {us}.

John says we do not only must believe like Christians, but we also must act like Christians.

If we claim to have fellowship with Him, yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth  1 john 1 v 6.

John exalts God in His epistle.

God is Light 1 verse 5

God is Love 4 verse 8 and 4 verse 16.

God is Righteous 2 verse 29.

God id life 5 verses 11 and 12.

John addresses assurance with both an objective and a subjective apologetic. Objectivity believers know historically and reality of Jesus Christ life and work.

the events of His life were observed by eyewitnesses and passed on.  1 verse 1 to 3.

Similarly those who have trust in God’s Son, possess eternal life 5 verse 12

Subjectively, Christians know that their lives have been transformed through faith in Christ. 5 verse 13.
