The story of Mary and Martha the difference in thinking.

Luke 10 verse 40: “But Martha was distracted by many tasks, and she came up and asked, ‘Lord, don’t You care that my sister has left me to serve alone? so tell her to give me a hand’.”

The Bible often shows us a tension between what humans expect and what we need. We expect that we must serve God for Him to love and accept and Bless us, In fact, we need to know the loving Son of God, who came to serve us, to accept and bless us.

In the story of Mary and Martha, we see the two attitudes side-by-side in the same house when we look at Martha and Mary her sister. Marta was distracted by all the preparation that had to be made. Distracted by what needed to be done, or was she trying to impress.

Martha racing around, Christ Jesus has come to her home, and she is reacting in a totally right manner it seems. Mary on the other hand is surely lazy and non caring. Mary is letting her sister do it all

To follow Our Lord and Our Friend is not about serving Him, it is not about doing anything for Him. It is about sitting at His feet and listening to Him, the One who has dine all we need.

Our Lord and Our Friend does not want begrudging servants. He does not want servants at all. our Lord and Our Friend wants friends, he did not come to help us learn how to be worthy servants, He really came to die for us because, we are not worthy servants.

As we read the story of Mary and Mathe, let all transform our thinking, and see first and foremost, we are not servants, we are served, that we can know the wonderful freedom of The Christian life.

In understanding this, we will find that we serve like we have never served before. By understanding though, we are not serving as servants, because through coming to Jesus The God, who serves, we now have a transformed and different identity.

There is something in just sitting at the feet of Our Lord and Our Friend, as the world that swirls around us.
