Blessed or Stressed

We know that stress is part of life.  In fact, a certain amount of stress is necessary for renewal and growth.  Efficiency often increases as stress increases.  However, when there is a stress overload, it becomes distress and this can result in sickness and emotional outbursts.

When stress is prolonged, it becomes harmful.  The same adrenaline that prepares our bodies for action can also be toxic and may lead to sickness, insomnia and hypertension.  Since we cannot avoid stress, we must learn to manage it. 

God’s Word tells us in Matthew chapter 28 verses 28 to 30 in The Message bible “are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to Me.  Get away with Me and you’ll recover your life.  I’ll show you how to take a real rest.  Walk with Me and work with Me – watch how I do it.  Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.  I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.  Keep company with Me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly”

This is one of my ‘life verses’.  I come back to it again and again.  I want to learn ‘the unforced rhythms of grace’. 

Our Lord and Friend offers a yoke (His yoke) as a means of providing rest for our souls. A yoke makes an animal’s load seem easier by distributing the weight.    The yoke of Christ is easy i.e., kindly, well-fitted, easy, good, pleasant, well-adjusted to the shoulders.  In verse 28, Jesus said “I will give you rest” = salvation.  In verse 29, He says “you shall find rest” – abiding.

In 1 Peter 5 verse 7, we are exhorted to “cast your cares upon Him for He cares for you”.  Roll your burdens over onto him.  This reminds me of a story of how a camel passes off the burden/load by getting down on its knees and rolling over to the side so the load can be removed.

Christ bears our burdens daily.  Let’s humble ourselves and yield to His yoke- His purposes for our lives and come into rest and peace, as He has promised.
