Choose Life. Words are powerful.
The words we speak can be either life-giving or destructive; they can build up or tear down. Deuteronomy 30:19 says “…..I set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your seed may live’. John 6:63, Jesus said ‘the words I speak to you, they are spirit and they are life’.
We have a responsibility not only for the words we speak, but also for whose words, and the kinds of words we listen to. Remember that those who gossip to us, will probably gossip about us. How we speak and how we listen will affect the whole atmosphere in our homes.
James chapter 2 verse 19 tells us to be “quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry”. Someone once said we have been given 2 ears and 1 mouth, so when we are in conversation with others, let’s be diligent to listen before we speak. Relationships form and grow as we listen to one another. And more than just listening, I desire to be “hearing “ what the other person is saying. “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks”, Luke 6 verse 45. Some people are better able to express themselves than others; and as we build relationships, even within our family, we can help those close to us to feel safe and valued as we attempt to ‘hear’ their hearts and not just their words.
We all need to know and feel loved and valued. Proverbs 31 verse 26 “she opens her mouth with wisdom and on her tongue is the law of kindness’. The Amplified Bible puts it like this ‘she opens her mouth in (skillful and Godly) wisdom. And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue (giving counsel and instruction).’
Kindness means being considerate, courteous, helpful and understanding of others. Showing care, compassion, friendship and generosity. Treating others as you would like to be treated. A kind person shows concern for the feelings of others and is helpful and generous.
Romans 2 verse 4 tells us that God’s kindness is meant to lead us to repentance. How powerful is kindness. We can choose like the woman in Proverbs 31 verse 26 to flow (speak) with the law of kindness on our tongues. Holy Spirit is our Strengthener, Helper, ever present. Hosea 2 verse 14 tells us God is kind to us and speaks kindly (gently) to us. Let’s do likewise.
