Faith in Action ‘One Man’s Story’

How Much for Yours?

Twenty-five years had passed since he left his home-town and country. Migrating to Australia after a painful divorce he had made a new start in this small coastal township. His business was doing well until adverse economic circumstances placed him into a difficult position. It was during this challenging time that he received a letter from a solicitor in his former home-town. The content of the letter was a great surprise.

“We have a client who would like to acquire your vacant property,” the letter read in part, offering him an amazing purchase-price. A series of telephone-calls established that his vacant block of land was now part of the main-street due to the town’s rapid expansion during the past 25 years. The sale of his almost forgotten property provided the man with financial independence for the rest of his life. It’s a fantastic story, isn’t it? And it’s true as well. It happened more than 40 years ago to a friend of mine.

How would you feel if someone made you a great offer for your vacant block of land? It is my belief that every human being is the owner of a vacant block of land. Religious people often use the term “state of sin,” and a sinner is therefore a citizen in the state of sin. Many people believe that sinners are bad people. The facts seem to contradict this opinion, because most sinners are actually very decent law-abiding citizens, who make wonderful contributions to their families and society.

A sinner, I believe, is a person who lives separated from God, alone on their small block of land. “Self” is either the queen or the king on this small unimproved block of land, also known as the state of sin. Yes, you and I, are the rulers in our small state. What we say goes, but despite the many benefits it offers, it’s actually a life of poverty, a life separated from God. All this is not our fault, that’s why God send Jesus to save us. Sixty-five years ago I was born in far-away Germany, in the state of North-Rhine Westphalia. For the past 45 years I have lived in Australia, but the acquisition of my vacant, unimproved allotment took place in Germany, when I was born. No matter where your birthplace may be, we are all citizens with a dual statesmanship, and it’s not our fault.

How much would you like for your property?

I know someone who is interested in your unimproved block of land. In fact, it is God, who is willing to acquire our allotment, yours and mine, to save us from our state of sin, our state of selfishness. This state, like the Roman Empire, will also collapse in the near future. The purchase price God offers is eternal life with God in paradise. No better offer is available. Jesus has paid the price for our allotment and the currency God uses is faith in Jesus Christ, because we can’t save ourselves. It is a gift of grace from a God of love.

“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Romans 10:13)

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

Dear Lord, I believe that Jesus is your son, who has died for the forgiveness of all my sins. I repent of all my sins and ask you to forgive me. Please come into my heart and be my Savior and Lord. I give myself to you to live for you. Thank you for your love. Amen
