In Acts 24, Paul was taken before Felix the governor of Caesarea. Felix was a person that had moved from slavery to freedom to high government power. Like most of the world today with commitment, he had been married at least three times. And by today’s world standard, that would be acceptable, but his third wife, Drusilla, was married to the king of Emesa, and Felix seduced her away from him.
It was said about Felix, that he was a master of cruelty and lust, who had and held the power of authority, with the deposition of a slave. This was the man the Ananias and the elders of the church were taking Paul before.
Paul’s defense to Felix, was one of faith and trust in Christ Jesus. Acts 24 verse 10 to 21.
Verse 14 to 16: V14“ But I confess this to you, that according to the Way, which they call the sect, so I worship my father’s God, believing all things that are written in the Law and the prophets.”
V 15: “And I have a hope in God, which these men themselves accept, that there is going to be a resurrection, both of the righteous and the unrighteous.”
V 16: “I always do my best to have a clear conscience towards God and men.”
Really there was nothing wrong with all of Paul’s testimony, but made the religious of the day offended.
Felix knew something of the ‘Way’ that Paul was referring to, and he adjourned the proceedings to consider. Even though he kept Paul under guard, he gave Paul some privileges V 23.
Felix was a powerful man, but he had ‘The disposition of a slave’, it was afraid V25.
Felix’s disposition held him back. God gave Felix a 2 year opportunity to learn about Jesus and He used the imprisoned Paul as His advocate.
2 Corinthians 5 verse 17:
“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation, old things have passed away and look, new things have come.’
Felix if he had accepted the message, would have been given a new disposition, to see himself as a Child of God. The Message of Salvation, all things become New in our lives. Do we know people like Felix that let themselves be held back, from hearing and receiving the message of New Life in Christ, or are we holding something back ourselves, from a complete New Life in Christ.
