Faith In Action ‘Blessed Are We’

Matthew Chapter 5 and 6; is called the Sermon on The Mount.

Jesus gathers His disciples on a hillside by the Sea of Galilee and lays out for them sermon-like concept to explain ethic of His Kingdom. He emphasizes the importance of responding with a heart attitude that goes beyond observing merely rules.

Understanding of The Sermon on the Mount, is found in ‘The Beatitudes’ or blessings [Verses 3 to 12} and also in the words that the disciples are ‘the light of the world {Verses 14 to 16}; {Message Bible:

“Here is another way to put it; You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand — shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.”

The understanding here is, we as followers are so lights, we do not become so by living according the new ways. First we receive God’s gift of Salvation through Repentance and Acceptance, then we walk in His ways. God makes us a new Creation with a light shining, His light shining, to be a witness to the world, His light shining so we can see His way for our lives.

So ‘The Sermon on the Mount’ is primarily instructions for Jesus’ followers. For Jesus followers His Words become a promise of the new possibilities in life that are at hand for those who have been made new by accepting God’s Kingdom.

Everybody remembers the Sermon on the Mount by ‘The Beatitudes’, but the sermon to goes on tho say a lot more. We are all affected by the words of The Sermon, in one way or another. When Jesus says {5 verse 21 to 30}, for instance. that a person who gets angry has committed murder. and a person who looks at another lustfully has already committed adultery, that sin is understood so radically that we are all included.

If we are walking in the Light as He is in the light, we will see the things that offend Him, and stop us from growing more effective in His ways. We cannot be over done with the Sermon on the mount in a hurry. It comforts us; it makes us uneasy. It warns us against treating this world and it ways as good enough. The sermon says, We are the light of the world, now go and shine in it.

God Bless.
