From The Heart

God is a safe place to hide

Psalm 46 The Message

Psalm 46 1-3.“God is a safe place to hide, ready to help when we need him.” These opening verses talk of standing fearless at the cliff-edge of doom and courageous in sea storms and earthquake; before the rush and roar of oceans, the tremors that shift mountains.

Psalm 46:4-6 speaks of “a river whose streams make glad the city of God; God is in the midst of her, she shall not be moved; God shall help her just at the break of dawn”.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus’ spoke of these rivers of living water flowing out of us, referring to the Holy Spirit. John 7:37 “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, ‘out of his heart will flow rivers of living water’.” V 39 “But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive.”

So how are we able to stand fearless and courageous in the midst of storms and earthquakes? By the power of Holy Spirit.

Psalm 46: 10 “Be still and know that I am God.”

In a world that seems to be falling apart, it’s easy to become frantic and lose touch with our Lord and Friend. But He has given us His Holy Spirit to live within us. As we purposefully “be still and know that He is God”; quiet ourselves: be conscious that “the God-of-Angel-Armies dwells in us and fights for us, protects us”; our focus can shift, and we can draw on His Peace and Joy in the Holy Spirit. He will strengthen us. The joy of the Lord is our strength.

God truly is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trouble.

Shalom.
