What a friend we have in Jesus

We have had such a full month and as I was contemplating what to write, the above song title came to mind. Sometimes I find that I can become so familiar with a song that I may miss what the Lord is saying to me.

What a friend we have in Jesus.

Do you have a close friend that you can share anything with and know that they will still love you? Will accept you and not judge you. Who only wants the best for you? Who can rejoice with you when you succeed and comfort you when you fail? Who really understands you – who takes the time to communicate and discuss your challenges until you find peace? How wonderful would that be.

Even if we had such a friend in our life, there would always be some time when they were otherwise occupied and so not available to help us. However Scripture tells us in Proverbs 18:24 “there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother.” Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

What a friend we have in Jesus.

In John 14:16, Jesus said “and I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper (Comforter), that He may abide with you forever”. Abide with you forever!

Our Lord and Friend abides with us – verse 17 says “for He dwells with you and will be in you.” There is no closer place.

May His abiding Presence lead and guide you this coming week; may you be aware of His loving kindness and strength moment by moment.
