From The Heart

Praus and Meek Warhorses

In Matthew 11:29, Jesus says of Himself “I am meek (praus) and humble of heart.” 1 Peter 3:4, Peter speaks of a “gentle (praus) and quiet spirit”.

I read an article this week that spoke about this Greek word praus which was said to describe war-horses. The article went on to say that these horses were trained to obey instantly and absolutely, no matter how loud and brutal the battle. These Greek soldiers had trained a horse to be controlled by nothing more than a touch from its rider; with only a nudge of the knee or a tug of the reins by the rider, the horse responded immediately. Although these animals were tremendously powerful, having the ability to propel their 1000 pound frames to speeds of up to 35 miles per hour, their power was under complete control. And while they may be gentle with their rider, they were fierce in battle. They would paw at the ground in anticipation, unafraid of the thundering sounds of the enemy bashing swords and lances against shields in an effort to intimidate. This type of horse seemed to devour the ground with fierceness and rage and couldn’t stand still when it heard the call to battle. (see Job 39:19-25)

Our Lord and Friend is this kind of meek; power under control. He is the Lord of the angel armies. He is the One Who fights our battles as we fix our eyes on Him and stand in His victory. Jesus had confidence as He was doing the will of the Father; perfectly led and empowered by Holy Spirit.

Let’s be encouraged that this meekness, a fruit of Holy Spirit, is abiding in us as we yield to Him.

Shalom.
