THE GRIEF AND GRACIOUSNESS OF GOD
God’s agony increased over his people in Jeremiah four. ’Oh, my anguish, my anguish! I writhe in pain. Oh, the agony of my heart!’ (verse 19).
The people he had brought from afar to freedom had turned away from his wisdom and knowledge with denial. They had become ungrateful, worshipers of stone idols, backsliding in adultery and refusing to repent. They refused correction and made their faces harder than stone. He asks, ‘Why should I forgive you? Your children have forsaken me yet I supplied all their needs.’
His forgiveness and his eyes that looked for just one that was honest and sought the truth (Chapter 5/3) was his hope for the fallen. In Chapter six/verse 16, the Lord says: ‘Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.’
If only they had understood that one verse and gained soul rest but refused to listen. How typical of today’s world where we do not want to listen because we want to live in our own ways and not God’s. Despite the denials of God’s leading he waits with forgiveness and love for us to recognize the preciousness of his fragrant spirit. Life without Jesus and faith is empty, of little value, lacking in trust, truth and blessings, but most of all it is living without light. His eternal life is the ultimate goal for us.
