The Bible is not confused or indifferent about the powerful concept it calls love. In New Testament times the international language was ‘Geek’. in which the New Testament was written. The Greek language had four distinctive words for love, each with it own meaning.

Lets start with ‘Eros’ denoted the relationship between male and female, including physical desire, craving, and longing. This word for love is not used in the New Testament.

Then there is ‘Stergos’ describes affection and was applied especially to mutual love between family members. It is not used in the New Testament either.

Followed by ‘Philos’ describes the care and concern that friends have for each other, that we would call brotherly love, Peter spoke of this kind of love when he and Jesus  discussed his future task of serving others. in John 21 verse 15 and 17.

Finally ‘Agape’ describe a unique type of supreme love involving  a conscious and delicate choice to do good for another, a commitment based on the willful choice of the lover, not the qualities of the person receiving the love. ‘Agape’ love is perhaps best seen in God’s love for the world, and also the love Our Lord and Our Friend tells believers to display.

‘Agape’ Love: I am sure we all know the scripture on God’s love in John 3 verse 16; and would be familiar with 1 Corinthians 13; Love is patient, Love is kind, that is the love Jesus wants His followers to display and use.
