John 17 – It has been called the greatest prayer in the bible. The words Jesus prayed in this scripture has come to be known as The High Priestly Prayer, and to be called the greatest prayer is surprising seeing there are 650 prayers in the Bible including the Lord’s Prayer.
Lets just take a look at verses 20 to 23 {Message bible}:
“I’m {Jesus] praying not only for them {the disciples} But also for those who will believe me {all of us believers} Because of them and their witness about me. The goal is for all of them {Yes us } to become one heart and mind —- Just as you, Father, are in me and I in you, So they {yes us} might be one heart and mind with us. Then the world might believe that You, in fact, sent me. The same glory you gave me, I gave them {yes us ], So they’ll {yes us] be as unified and together as we are — I in them {Yes us} you in me. They they’ll {yes us} be mature in this oneness, and give the godless world evidence That you’ve sent me and loved them {yes us} In the same way you’ve loved me.
There is a lot of yes’s there, because that is how much Our Lord and Our Friend loves us. In the prayer Jesus expresses his love and concern for those {yes us} who believe in Him.
Jesus is our High Priest is continually interceding for us, but instead of offering an animal sacrifice, as the priest at the time did, Jesus became the ultimate sacrifice by laying down His own life.
The words of the prayer offer comfort and assurance to the Christians then as they do now to Us {yes us}.
The words of The Prayer are an assurance of the great Hope we have. We have a God {or Lord and Our Friend} who loves us. No matter how hopeless things seem on earth, in Christ Jesus, we have ultimate eternal hope, now and in eternity.
People who don’t know Jesus, will really miss out and it should make us all the more proactive to let everybody we meet, know about this exciting way of life, that Jesus prayed to His Father about, that all who believe on Him might have. {Yes All who Believe that Jesus is The Christ}
read all the Prayer that take in all of John 17 and be blessed.
God Bless.
