2 John At A Glance

Second John is the second shortest book in the New Testament. It is only 245 words in the original Greek text, and it would easily fit on a single piece of papyrus. I t is an excellent example of persuasive discourse.

The ‘Elect lady” most likely a reference to the local church.

Quoting 2 John verse 1, 2 and 3 from the Message Bible.

“My dear congregation, I, your pastor {John}, love you in very truth, and I’m not alone – everyone who knows the TRUTH that has taken up permanent residence in us loves you. Let Grace, Mercy. and Peace be with us in TRUTH, and Love from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, Son of the father.”

The word “TRUTH” is found five times is this short letter of thirteen verses. It is the key word. Love also occurs five times. TRUTH AND LOVE are inseparable.

John tells his children {congregation} to firstly walk in Love, secondly to Obey the commandments, and thirdly Love one another and fourthly guard the Teaching of Christ.  If they do all these things they will not be deceived by the antichrist.

Many false teachers were travelling among the churches, who would not confess that Jesus Christ was here in the flesh. These false teachers did not believe in the humanity of Christ. they denied His Incarnation. If you call Him “Lord” and deny His Deity, you are a liar, and an antichrist which is clearly explained by John in this epistle.

John begins and ends his letter with a reference to a believers chosen position.

If we take a couple of verse from 1 John 5 verse 11 and 12. Message bible.

” This is the testimony in essence; god gave eternal life; the life is in His Son. So whoever has the Son, has life; whoever rejects the Son, rejects life.”

Contemplative Questions.

Jesus can love us without our loving Him back, but without our loving back, His joy isn’t full. In that way, He needs our love. What do you think about the fact that Jesus needs your love? What impact does it have on you to know that there’s a place in His heart that only you can fill? How does it change the way you think about prayer {communication with Him}.

The second epistle of John is a wonderful reference of encouragement as well as a warning of false teachers.

Read it and Enjoy.

God Bless
