Traditions are sometimes strange things, what do hymns and football have in common?
Well if you have ever watched a football game, particularly in England and Wales, as well as cheering for their teams, the crowds will erupt into a hymn.
“Guide me O Thou great Jehovah
Pilgrims through a barren land.
I am weak, but thou art mighty.
Hold me with you Thy powerful hand.
Bread of heaven
Feed me till I want no more.”
Great words! “Guide me through a barren land” reminds us we are on a journey, we’re only really just pilgrims in a foreign land.
“Guide me Oh Thou Great Jehovah” in the old testament, which is fulfilled in thenew testament God had names referred to as Elohistic names.
“Elohistic” names are those names which have to do with relationship of God with His creation (you and me).
“EL” – To be strong powerful mighty, It is in the singular. It is used of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
The Father is “EL” (Genesis 14 verses 18to 22)
The Son is “EL” (Isaiah 7 verse 14,) Immanu[el] (Isaiah 9 verse 6 to 9)
The Holy Spirit Is “EL” (Job 33 verse 4, Job 37 verse 10)
“Elohim” Plurality of divine Persons used 2500 times in the original old testament.
“EL-Elyon” The most high God (Genesis 14 verse 18)

“ELohim-Saboath God of hosts (Psalm 80 verse 7 to 14)
“Immanuel” God with us (Isaiah 7verse 14) God made flesh The incarnate word (John 1 verse 1 to 3)
This is to point out how powerful and mighty God is. The God that loves us, wants a relationship with His creation. THAT IS YOU AND ME
“Guide me O thou great Jehovah” this is what they are singing about at the football match, if only they knew.
The God all powerful who wants to have relationship.
He is able to care for us.
He is able to provide for us. Most importantly of all He cares for us.
Reality God all powerful, All Mighty, All Knowing, LOVES US
Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away, the thought that God loves us should take our breath away.
God Bless
O F J
I’ve never heard any hyms at a football match.
Not as the originals, but many of the tunes are based off old hymns.
Riiight…..the most shocking perversions you’ll ever hear anywhere! 🙂
Haha. Not at all (: I’ll be the first to admit I like nothing more than raising my voice and cheering with my fellow season fans. Especially if we’re next to the Away supporter 😛
