“The time has come” Mark 1 verse 15 (new international version)

What a good way to start explaining the Gospel of Mark. These are the first recorded words of Jesus in Mark’s Gospel.

In a variety of contexts we have probably used them ourselves. When we felt that important decisions could be delayed no longer. At some point in our life the decision in question will be whether to follow Jesus wholeheartedly or in a superficial way.

One of the most common themes in Mark is about preparation.

Preparation by John the Baptist (the forerunner)

John’s coming was in fulfillment of Messianic prophecy (prophecy from old testament that tells about Jesus’ coming)

“I will send my messenger ahead of you who will prepare your way.”

The quotations refer to Old testament books Malachi 3 verse 1 and Isaiah 40 verse 3.

Preparation by Baptism

Jesus was baptised with John’s baptism in obedience to appointed ordinance. John recognised immediately that this man was not a subject for baptism of repentance that he was preaching. There was in this face a purity and majesty that touched John’s heart about his own unworthiness.

Jesus was the standard and example of righteousness. Jesus would fulfill every duty he required others to do.

Preparation by receiving the Holy Spirit.

Jesus went down into the baptismal water in obedience to His Father. He came out of the water under an open sky with The Holy Spirit descending on Him, and the voice of His Father declaring Him to be His Beloved Son.

Preparation by a Divine call.

A voice from heaven Mark 1 verse 11

Later we hear the same voice in His transfiguration.

Preparation by testing.

“At once the spirit sent Him out into the desert” Mark 1 verse 12

Jesus was led to be tempted. It was no accident or evil fate, but by divine appointment.

We find that path of duty often takes us through temptation, “but NO temptation has seized you except that which is common to man (all temptation is common to us all) and God is faithful, He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bare, but when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” 1 Corinthians 10 verse 13

Jesus overcame temptation by the Word always telling satan it is written.

Satan is always defeated by the Word of God.

It is also interesting to note that Jesus never called any person from idleness, He called busy and successful people to follow Him.

Everyone can turn their work or business into a channel of service for Jesus.

The Gospel of Mark is about servanthood, are you ready to serve, are you prepared to serve, are you ready? THE TIME HAS COME
