Dealing With Difficulties ‘Shame’

Dealing with Difficulties Shame
Shame says, “I am bad”, verses “I did something bad”. A dictionary definition
for shame: “a painful feeling of humiliation or distress caused by the
consciousness of wrong or foolish behaviour” (The Oxford English Dictionary).
Shame is different from guilt; it is a feeling of badness about yourself. Guilt is
about behaviour – a feeling of “conscience” from having done something
wrong or against one’s values.
But the Bible gives us a powerful remedy for shame; and it’s simply to look to
Jesus, our Lord and Friend and Deliverer.
The psalmist said, “They looked to Him and were radiant, and their faces were
not ashamed” (Psalm 34:5, NKJV). I believe the Holy Spirit is ministering to us
with this reminder: “Arise, shine; for your light has come! And the glory of the
LORD is risen upon you.” (Isaiah 60:1, NKJV)
God created us to be radiant, to shine, and to live in His glory. But shame is a
weapon that tries to stop us from shining. The instinct of someone who suffers
from shame is to hide or withdraw, due to fear of exposure (Genesis 3:10). So,
shame comes against our very identity.
Romans 10:11 tells us ‘Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame”.
When we behold our Lord Jesus Christ, we see that our identity is found in
Him. We identify with the death, burial, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus
Christ. We are seated with Him in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:4-6) the Blood
of Jesus removes sin and shame forever. We are new creations in Him. Amen.
Isaiah 61:7 “instead of your shame you shall have double honour”.
