From The Heart

‘Rejoice the heart’

Proverbs 27 verse 9

“Oil and perfume rejoice the heart; so does the sweetness of a friend’s counsel that comes from the heart”. AMP

The Passion Translation says it like this – “Sweet friendships refresh the soul and awaken our hearts with joy, for good friends are like the anointing oil that yields the fragrant incense of God’s presence”.

The New King James Version uses the word ‘DELIGHT’ – “Ointment and perfume delight the heart, and the sweetness of a man’s friend gives delight by hearty counsel”

1 Thessalonians 5:23 “And the God of peace Himself sanctify you wholly, and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ”.

I think that often, many of us are aware to nourish our spirits with the Word and prayer and worship and to nourish our bodies with good food, water, exercise, sleep etc.; but sometimes we forget to nourish our souls. We are 3 part beings and each part is important for life and vitality.

When I read this scripture in Proverbs 27:9, I was reminded of some things that I personally love, that delight my heart and soul. Like the fragrance of a beautiful rose or a hand cream with my favorite essential oils.

What are the things that refresh your soul? What are some things that delight your heart? Maybe it’s seeing the early morning blush of pink in the sky as the sun begins to rise, or peachy hues when it is setting at night. Maybe it’s the moon in the clear sky at night or the refreshing, clear air after a storm.

I hope this week, as we are heading into the preparations for Christmas and celebrations, that we take some time to just reflect and refresh and allow our souls and hearts to be delighted in the creation and provision of our Lord and Friend.

As we do this, I believe others around us will benefit. Joy is contagious. As we are refreshed, we can bring that to people around us too. Maybe take a few moments to phone or text a friend with some words of encouragement – it may be the very thing that delights their heart today.

May you be like a well-watered garden
