Then And Now

Then and Now.

At first, in the oracle of Isaiah, there is hope between God and his people for a new beginning. It turned out not be so.  In Chapter 43, after their escape through the mighty sea of waters God reminds the people, ‘See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up, do you not perceive it?’ Verse 18-19).  ‘But,’ he proclaims, ‘you have burdened me with your sins and wearied me with your offences.

Note this beginning pattern of rejection, of God’s promises that, ‘There is no God apart from me.  For, I am a righteous God and a Saviour.  There is none but me.’

Along comes Jeremiah, a prophet who is angry that the people have turned their backs on their God and all are sinning. There is deceit, betrayal, burnt offerings and they consider the word of the Lord offensive while evil deeds abound.  In 5verse 20 to22 ‘Announce this and proclaim it (declares the Lord).  Hear this you foolish and senseless people who have eyes which do not see and have ears but do not hear. Should you not fear me?  Should you not tremble in my presence?’

The people took no notice of their loving God who says: ‘Ask where the good way is and walk in it and you will find rest for your souls, but you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’

My point is this and my repetition of quoting from Jeremiah is, that ancient spiritual passages seem to be happening today in this age of turning away from Christian principles. Things like lack of respect for others, living our lives just to benefit ourselves, pursuing self-satisfying pleasures in disregard of our fellow person but mainly, dismissing the basic laws of God and without honour, truth or justice. Moral fibre is so lacking in those who rule countries and get carried away with power. Where is the following of the good ways, the righteous ways, the changes of morals in society. As in the days of Jeremiah there is the turning away from God’s preaching teaching and one wonders where it will end as more and more obstacles lead us to stumble and fall.

Stop! Pause!! Reflect and Seek the paths that lead to resting souls.

There is only one way.

Be Bless
